An urban contradiction
Journey under the sun

“Urban contradiction” is the first photography exhibition of Eirene Evripidou. Living between London and Athens, Eirene is in a constant search of the contradictions hidden in the urban landscape. Her work focuses on the elements that make a modern city more colourful, beautiful and optimistic, those elements that bridge the gap between urban reality and the magic of nature. It is in contrast with the harshness and pain of everyday life, in contrast with the melancholic gray cityscape.

Her camera lens works as a kaleidoscope. It isolates and magnifies subjects, giving them new meanings and reflections, through a journey under the sun. The drops of rain in a park in London are converted into a mirror that reflects the sunlight and the colors of life; a flower on the sidewalk of a street in Athens becomes a beacon of hope.

The art of macro photography allows her to capture not only the obvious, but also what is hidden, thus highlighting the microcosm. This hidden world that lies between us is a sign that there is always the potential for hope, beauty and grace.

Eirene Evripidou was born in London and is originally from Cyprus. She lived and went to school in Athens, where she attended the International Baccalaureate. She then studied Modern Greek Studies with Humanities Computing at the famous Kings College London, where she also completed her first masters on Digital Culture and Technology. She continued her studies with a second masters on Digital Humanities at the University College London.
Apart from photography, Eirene showed great interest in poetry from an early age. The result of this preoccupation was expressed in her first collection of poetry entitled "Glass Roses", which was released in 2011 by the publishing house AIOLOS. This is a collection that includes poems which she wrote during her studies, starting in 2006, when she was only 21 years old. Today she prepares her second poetry collection.
